Il Dado
Since 2005 we work upon the safeguard of a Rom community in Borgaro, nearby Turin. From there, Impreuna (”Together”) was born, a complex of initiatives aimed at promoting the rights and social growth of the community. After the arson that caused the destruction of Cascina La Merla camp in late November 2007 where the Rom were located, we began a regularization process towards the community. A key role is played by cultural mediation activities.
We assist underage youngsters in the educational field whereas adults are supported in job-hunting and all bureaucratic issues – due also to the recent membership of Romania gained in the EU. Impreuna has been carried along in collaboration with Turin Province Committee and the Italian Red Cross.
Now, thanks to the support by the City of Settimo Torinese, the CRI, Architettura delle Convivenze, the Gruppo Abele and many other subjects, Il Dado (”The Die”) is born: the first experience of auto-restructuring and auto-building addressed to the Rom community in Piedmont.
The path provides for the entrance of the whole family in the community, as a choice of abandoning the camp, and the consequent sharing and acceptation of the rules the community gave itself, and the beginning of all the other aspects: the registration in school for the minors, the job integration through training courses, internships, job shadowing etc., for the adults, until the economic situation gets stable, which brings to the search for a permanent residence, as the Dado is a temporary accommodation, also in order to allow other families to follow the same path.
When a family concludes its path it is accompanied to the new residence, and still supported at least for the first period of time; and another family substitutes it in the Dado.
The new families are contacted thanks to the project Media/ssistenza.
“Il Dado” is in Settimo Torinese (TO), via Cottolengo 2 (at the corner with via Milano).
[ 19-04-2009; 10:00 a 14:00. ] Sunday, 19th, is Easter. The orthodox one of course. We of Terra del Fuoco will celebrate it, at the “Dado”, together with the Roms families living there. And we will take the opportunity to make them feel our proximity and solidarity.
Yes, because a few days ago something happened; or rather, it did not happen, but […]
